The project involves 4 partners from 4 different countries (Finland, Sweden, France, Germany). UPM is the consortium leader and coordinator of ValChem.

 UPM

As the frontrunner of the new forest industry UPM leads the integration of bio and forest industries into a new, sustainable and innovation-driven future. Major competencies and assets brought to the project are wood sourcing, wood handling and conditioning, know how and facilities for upgrading of crude sugar and lignin, expertise in preparing and conducting investment projects as well as marketing of products to industrial customers. www.upm.com

UPM is the coordinator of the project and leads work packages 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

 Sekab

SEKAB is one of Europe’s leading ethanol players and produces and distributes bioethanol fuel and green chemical products. SEKAB contributes to the project via its CelluAPP® technology and the process demonstration facility (BDP), which disintegrates wood to sugars and crude lignin. The CelluAPP® technology has been verified at demonstration scale in a 24/7 continuous operation for sugar, lignin, biogas and ethanol production and will be used to validate the downstream processes and applications in ValChem. SEKAB leads work package 2.

 METabolic EXplorer

METabolic EXplorer is a pioneer in biological chemistry and provides competitive bio based industrial solutions to produce chemicals from renewable feedstock. In this project METabolic EXplorer’s sugar-to-MPG process will be adapted and validated for wood-derived sugar hydrolysate. METEX leads work package 4.

 Technische Universität Darmstadt

The Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUDA) is one of Germany’s leading technical universities. Within the last decade the research group “Macromolecular Chemistry” has focused its research on functional polymers and biopolymers. In ValChem TUDA contributes its expertise and facilities for lignin characterization as well as fundamental knowledge in lignin chemistry towards the development of lignin applications. TUDA leads work package 7.
